Mortality rates immediately after severe hurricanes in Cuba have decreased over the past three decades

The objective of this study is to understand how Cuba responds extreme weather events, which can help identify and disseminate good public health practice. design an observational using routinely collected mortality data. National daily counts after severe hurricanes arrived on the landmass since 1990 were compared with baseline values. Incidence rate ratios during hurricane for four weeks afterwards calculated eligible hurricanes: Georges (1998), Dennis (2005), Ike (2008) Irma (2017). Mortality rates decreased over time (P < 0.001 interaction), no excess observed Hurricane in 2017. that have made landfall three decades, despite most recent (Irma) being one strongest decades. This suggests Cuban preparations responses are probably contributing mitigation national these periods.
